I need more exchange to improve my teaching method
I think we all do - let's hope we never stop learning from one another and refining the effectiveness of what we do... At the moment I'm very excited about the things I can do with a Macintosh computer that I couldn't do before - like multimedia presentation instead of static text and pictures... and of course the www as a way of reaching new people and 'meeting' new colleagues :-)
and the theory.
Actually the word 'theory' has such negative associations for so many people, that I prefer to talk about 'background ideas', 'overview of the general situation', etc. For most of us, life is simply too short to deal with speculations, and things which you can't use in a living situation...
So I really hope that you can help me.
Gladly if I can, and you think my approach can be relevant to a culture like the Chinese - where I could imagine that the sheer multitude of people could mean problems in talking about the value of the individual in a meaningful way...
I have no direct experience, but in the West we believe that there is a long and strong tradition in China of reverence for what older people - and even dead people - have said we should do and may do; and if this is a real force in today's life it must a factor to deal with in affirming the essential value of the individual's experience. But in a way that aspect is rather similar in Russian culture, and in France - and indeed in Judaic/Christian/Islamic culture generally.
I do indeed respect the teachings of earlier authors myself, particularly from renaissance times: but this is because they are a source of inspiration, and they offer simple and workable solutions to problems in today's confused society - and I always have free choice, of course, to take what is of value and ignore what is repressive...
