Usually they have learned English about ten years... the terrible reality is that they can not use it
... and this is repeated all over the world ...
about 4500 words... that they can not use
It seems clear, then, that it must be better to know a few words that you can use in a friendly, constructive, creative way :-)
And then, of course, the individual has learned not only the words, but the all-important fact that 'I can use a foreign language to do something which feels good!' :-)
- and then the way is open to the learner to assimilate any amount of new knowledge, depending only on what they have an intrinsic need for - i.e. based on what they perceive as their own needs, rather than something which a teacher or textbook-author thinks they ought to need or know...
