Just about every self-respecting organisation - cultural, educational, commercial in the world now has a web-site with text and pictures, where people sitting at home can link up their computer to a host computer - a 'server' - and get an idea about what it looks like there, when you can get in, how to get there.

A goodly number of them have taken a further step and produced a multimedia-presentation - like a web-site with the addition of music, speech, animated transitions, even moving pictures.

These involve larger files, so these are often copied as a compressed package to the visitor's own computer - 'downloaded'- to be enjoyed later - though there are new techniques which allow even these to be viewed 'on the fly' - while connected.

The more established alternative is to invest in the generous space which CD format gives, as the Louvre, the National Gallery, and Disney have done.
