or even the monitor, as far as I can see, but the way two pieces of software interpret one another's digital data...

It starts when you're in Photoshop, and you discover that two color pickers, Photoshop's own and the OS8 one, have different ideas about what the numerical value of a color is: you pick a color by number in the one, and ask the other what color it is, and it gives you different numbers.

Is that what computers are about?
