The rough and the smooth: bitmap and vector fonts

So, what can we do about the lumps??

After all that, what do you do if you get lumpy display because you only have a bitmap version of a font and you don't have it at the size you want?

- you can try and get a TrueType version of the font, for example via an internet search;

- or if you have $350 to spare, you can make your own with Fontographer, while prices for the products in the FontLab series range from $50 - $550; for Windows users there are sharewares too, listed here.

People have been used to saying that the Adobe Type Manager addresses the problem, but it seems clear that that is specifically with PostScript fonts, including OpenType: but there's no mention there of TrueType. I certainly had the impression that it was much more generally used than that before: but maybe it's that, since PDF is a PostScript format, earlier versions of Acrobat needed ATM: but from v.4 on, Acrobat has it own routines for anti-aliasing.
