The most important thing in music for David is the work itself, the process, and the feeling that you get from it.

Working with pupils at different levels is never a problem for him. For the weaker ones he's always ready to calmly explain things over and over again. By his suggestion, he can give lots of self-confidence to people he's working with.

One example is getting people who've never had anything to do with music singing an opera in two weeks; in this way he has put on two renaissance operas in Estonia.

There is no doubt that David is a fanatic. He hates all kinds of superficiality - then he is unmerciful.

He can also be rather authoritarian. When you work with him, you have to start with the way he sees things; yet at the same time he IS a great authority. Just knowing how much material he has worked through creates the feeling of confidence that everything he thinks and says must be right...

The positive sides far outweigh the negative!
