Here, I used the deepest for the basic text, the lightest for the background, the second and third deepest for the visited and unvisited links: I didn't use the fourth one, to make a better contrast with the background... Since it's available, you could use it for the active link - the one which shows while you hold the mouse down - but it can be worth having a real contrast for that one, so people know their click is having an effect...
You can use the same tones in ANOTHER WAY
And you can use REDS, GREENS, VIOLETS, OLIVES, TEALS, PEACOCK BLUES etc. the same way
