Afterword

It's years since I first heard of Runö, and was struck by how similar it seemed to be to the islands I had lived on in Norway, and to Ulvön near where I live in Sweden.

The similarities are surely there, but you have to dig a bit find them: and you have to deal with the basic sadness of wars and invasions and forcible depopulation - on top of what was a pretty hard life-style in the first place.

But the contacts we made were very special, and I wouldn't have missed the experience for anything.
