READ ABOUT THE PIECE

Listen to David playing the music:

- recorded quickly on a synthesiser with low quality mp3 compression , just to give an idea ...

This recording is only intended as a taster to give an impression of what the piece is or might be, not to provide a complete listening experience. It's played on a Yamaha synthesiser and recorded direct onto the Mac, and of course it's only me playing everything; but at least it's a more human experience than a midi file, and perhaps leaves open more questions of interpretation than if it were a live recording of a real voice and instruments - though I have one of those too if you're interested.

- the solo singing part is simply 'Choir oohs', and I used a clarinet on the 2nd violin part - another aria in the same collection has an obbligato chalumeau, presumably an early clarinet.

- the violin parts are marked con sordino (muted), and I aimed to reflect that in the general sound, though my particular model of synthesiser doesn't come with a 'muted violin' button.

- on the basso part I used harp, cello, and bass. The part is marked 'pizzicato', though I used a bow on the cello, really just for a richer sound, to contrast with the pizz. bass ... In a historical performance I would propose following the score and plucking the cello, and indeed only using the 16' sound of a double-bass (sounding an octave lower than written) with a larger ensemble, e.g. if there were more than one violin on each of the upper parts and perhaps more than one polyphonic instrument on the bass, like an organ or harpsichord.
