I've been working on-and-off all through the year on a major project to document the music and musical thinking at the founding of the university where I'm a guest professor. There's still not much in the way of a concrete result to look at, but with the help of historians and archivists in Tartu, I'm building up a fascinating picture of the human background...

It turns out that there were normally about 40 students each year, mostly from mainland Sweden, all training to be Lutheran priests - which is what education was all about then, of course. They had the upper floor of a normal-sized town house, previously used by Jesuits, and they shared it with the gymnasium  downstairs.
