To
carve the double-headed salmon on the front pillar, it is necessary
to glue some extra wood on both sides of the pillar in order to have
a good relief, see Fig. 2.8.
Rows
of decorative gouge cuts may be done on the inside of the pillar and
on the neck and this calls for clean cutting and neatness.
The
gouge must be extremely sharp and the first incision must be across
the grain, while the second runs in to meet the first, so freeing
the chip. The row of gouge cuts must be drawn with a pencil first
and all cuts must be exactly the same.
Celtic
spirals in low relief could also be carved at the top of the pillar
and at the base. This is best done with a small parting tool.
