I saw the same contrast again with text - it's OK on the flat, except that FreeHand for some reason couldn't find the apostrophe in my handwriting font, though Illustrator had no problem with it;

Illustrator 9 click for a closer view FreeHand 8 click for a closer view - but you really see the difference when it comes to putting text on a path ... Yes, I know it looks like hand-writing, but - while the capital D [here] is actually my hand, writing - these two examples use the font I made from my hand-writing.
