FreeHand
draws closed paths 'that look like calligraphy',
as the help file says, as an option within the
freehand tool; you can choose whether or not
the programme automatically removes the overlap
where the path you draw crosses itself, to reduce
the number of elements in a path.

FreeHand
left me with 23 points if I didn't remove the
overlap, and I haven't the faintest idea how
to start tweaking that mess. If I did remove
the overlap, I didn't see any points, just the
bounding box; with that I can bend and stretch
and distort to my heart's content, but it seems
I can't tweak any internal proportions nor have
second thoughts about the thickness of the stroke.
Fontographer
and CorelDraw seem to work the same way as Freehand.
