I guess this is pretty high, the surrounding peaks are 2,500 somethings (meters?), but good roads, climbing only gradually; rocky, not much growing but a bit even so; here and there fresh falls of rock make me begin to wonder what I'm letting myself in for ... later, bits of the road are actually crumbling away, but it's perfectly possible to drive on tarmac all the time if you use the other side of the road for a while; the ruined shepherds' cottages remind me of Snowdon, the general sense of abandonment remind me of Glencoe ...

The first change comes when I get to Imbros, the beginning of a gorge which my tramps' guide-book has told me to look out for; occasional cafés amongst the rocks ... Suddenly the gradient gets pretty steep and goes downhill instead of uphill, the road gets much narrower, I feel a real temptation to look over the edge while driving and it all gets a bit scary.
Very majestic, the way the sea suddenly comes into view!
But then it gets really scary! Maybe 20 hairpin bends in quick succession, very steep downwards gradient, very steep sides so that if you would drive over the edge that would be the end of the car and you; the strain of knowing that making you more and more sleepy, so you need more and more to stop for a break; but there's nowhere flat to stop, and then there's the fear that you might not put the handbrake on properly or it might not hold and you loose someone else's car just like that. Not an experience I would choose to repeat: but there is another way out, along the coast to the east.
