Using a simple text editor and viewing the result in a browser

One possibility is simply to look at the various colour charts which are available, and choose from there.

Another is to play with patterns of numbers, and see what comes out: I had the idea of starting from both ends at once, so to speak -

• the first number starts from the bottom, 003366,
  • the second starts from the top, FFCC99;
• the third is one step up from the first, 336699,
  • the fourth is one step down from the second, CC9966;
• and the fifth is right in the middle, 666666
