he early music consort Via Sonora was founded in Tartu, Estonia in 1985 when, at the initiative of Raho Langsepp, the consort first came together and performed on the occasion of harvest thanksgiving at Tarvastu Church. The group continued to play for friends with occasional public performances, mostly in churches, and has been performing as a consort regularly since 1993.

esides touring frequently in Sweden, Denmark and Germany they have performed at a number of festivals, including the Tage Alter Music in Osnabruck, the Summer Music festival in Århus, Stockholm's Water Festival, and Banchetto Musicale in Vilnius.

Over the years a number of different people have joined the consort for longer or shorter periods, all attracted by their common love of early music.

edieval music has remained the focal point of interest and research, although more recently programmes have included renaissance and baroque repertoire. In interpreting early music Via Sonora aims to follow historical tradition and performance practice, at the same time feeling free to improvise within a variety of stylistic conventions.

This means that what you hear is far more than the simple notes which have survived the storms of war and everyday wear-and tear though the years: Lilian Langsepp might have been speaking for the whole consort when she said, "I try to find my music in Tobias Hume's notes, and Tobias Hume's music within me..."
