Of course, I don't need to rave about it here - it's written up everywhere you look. With rather little income, I supposed I would manage for a few years with system 7 and my favourite shareware utilities... But then I happened  to see in the Apple Magazine that they were offering Operating System 8 free to anyone who bought a new Mac after 1st July - even though you register, they don't tell you directly: and even the dealer, through whom you have to apply, didn't know about it and had to specially ask Apple in Germany... Then there's the fact that I got it at half-price because it was an end-of-the-line Power Performa 5260 - so actually I was fully prepared for nothing to happen...
