Perceptions of this kind do not get reinterpreted for our conscious minds before being stored. Those that finally reach the surface and become conscious do so at some later time, in the form of intuitive flashes or dreams. In a teaching situation, what a student perceives subliminally will condition her/his receptiveness, confidence, and creativity. According to the "micro-messages" s/he picks up from the teacher's facial expressions, body language, voice intonations, dress, bearing, punctuality, warmth, sensitivity, desire to communicate, etc., students will tend to open up or close down - usually without even realising that they are doing so. Consequently, for effective learning to take place, teachers must master both the perceptible and imperceptible planes of communication, and prepare their classes on both levels. |
