A sample lesson plan

The Post Office Section - 1 of 4

Chit-chat to elicit certain vocabulary: for example:

"What are some of the different things you might send from a post office?"

Answers hoped for: Letters, post cards, parcels

"And in deciding how to send something, what factors might be important?"

Answers hoped for: the quickest way, the cheapest way

"What are some of the special services that exist?"

Answers hoped for: airmail, registered.

Have them act out, in pairs, situations where they do the following transactions in a post office:

  • a letter to accept a job within two days
  • advertising material
  • a valuable watch as a birthday present
  • commercial samples, etc
  • a cheque to pay an urgent bill

Prepare cards for each situation (five in all) and have each couple act out the card they choose; then scramble the partners and have them choose new cards. If one person does the same situation twice, let him or her just reverse roles.
