But then neither Illustrator's effort at auto-tracing, nor Corel Draw's, were - as the Swedes say - anything you would hang in the Christmas tree.

But then neither programme is intended to do that - Adobe's and Corel's way of handling this function is to refer you to separate programme, Streamline and CorelTrace, which do only that.

Illustrator does indeed have something called an 'auto-trace tool', which is what I used here, but it involves drawing within 8 pixels of the edge of your starting picture, and only gives you the outlines even so. So how is that 'auto'? I would have said 'slightly power-assisted' ...
