I don't know whether I'm doing something wrong, but I can't get the other programmes to offer that quality: here's FreeHand, for example ...

Perhaps it is simply an Adobe advantage, since they do mention Illustrator as one of the programmes, along with Photoshop, Premiere and Acrobat, whose recent versions have their own font-smoothing functions independent of the operating system; and Canvas and Microsoft as examples of programmes which do not support smoothed color text at all.
