"Modern musicians mostly interpret the old notes in a modern way - as if you were to ride a horse-and-cart on a motorway...

"What you can do instead is to read the old directions and act according to those. Of course, we can't know that we are actually doing precisely the same thing as the early musicians did, but we discover that we feel good while doing what they describe. But it's also possible that musicians from earlier times wouldn't recognise their creations in our interpretations.

"There's no shortage of conductors who reach an artistic goal: but people often have to pay for that with their personal feeling of well-being. Naturally I would like a well-polished result as much as anyone else: but if I have to choose, I would put the process in the first place - anyone can do the polishing afterwards."
