"It's not healthy to avoid conflicts"

Body and soul were happy in Norway

When I asked David if he has thought of returning to his native country, he says no:

"The whole British society consists of people who don't understand each other."

He much prefers to talk about the previous place he lived, Norway.

"I fell in love with Norway at first sight. I felt that that was the place I belonged and where I came from. I didn't know it then, but in fact Kettlewell is a Viking name: my body and my soul were very happy in Norway, but unfortunately there wasn't the right intellectual stimulus there. I got very tired because I had to give of myself all the time, give & give constantly...

"The district where I live in Sweden is rather sparsely inhabited and it can be lonely in the winter. The people who live there are very friendly; but most of the talk centres on forest and farming, and unfortunately I need more than that..."

Because of that and his international teacher training work, David travels a lot and has to get used to feeling at home in strange places rather quickly. So he always takes with him something which lies close to his heart. At least his pens and ink bottle and his half-written manuscripts. And the harp if an instrument is needed too. David's innumerable papers travel together with him in banana boxes.
