A Minoan palace!

Next on the map of experiences-you-must-not-fail-to-miss is Zakros: the upper village, Pano Zakros, is a refuelling station for anyone bold enough to take themselves on foot down their splendid ravine, the valley of the dead; the lower village, Kato Zakros, said to be the second most-impressive Minoan palace after Knossos.

It might well have been that 4,000 years ago.

Today, however, all that's there now are the ubiquitous dead yellow stones which mark a few foundations, nothing higher than 30 cm, all firmly fenced in and padlocked since 3 pm.

3 pm Friday, that is.

Several cars have overtaken me on my way down the side of the ravine, but they must have had an appointment with Neptune and disappeared into the sea on arrival, because there's not a single trace of human life by the time I get down there.
