A safe refuge for me, too

After asking around in a couple of places, I go for a smart hotel for once, since the price is the same as the private houses, there's breakfast, and it feels like it might be a bit warmer, the hot water a bit hotter, there might be someone to talk to: and to be honest, by this stage I'm ready for something that feels a bit more familiar.

It has a nice enclosed courtyard with a palm tree whose thick trunk suggests that it has been there a good many years and that they have built the hotel round it; there's even a square metre of grass.

The room they show me looks out onto this same courtyard, but it smells too strongly of the previous occupant's smoke; their next offering looks out onto the car-park at the back, together with the kiddies playground all covered up in tarpaulins for the winter.

Oh well. At least there's a cat, a lovely grey one sitting in the saddle of a motorbike ...
