In the morning when I come to write up my diary after breakfast, I discover to my horror that Jenny, my beloved iBook, my portable Mac computer, the extension of my brain, the only heart-to-heart companion I have on this trip, hasn't charged her battery up during the night.
"Computer", I hear you say, "on holiday?!" Well, that's my business, I say - my concept of a holiday was partly to spend a week in a quiet place where there was some sun and no diary or telephone; but partly to have uninterrupted time to play with my Jenny, and develop a variety of creative functions which I haven't had time for since I started working 8 days a week for the churches ...
The problem is simply that the wire connecting the transformer to the hole in the wall has come loose - it looks just the same as it did when I left home, and indeed the day before when it still worked, but evidently it has been jerked a bit further, or a bit too far, without my noticing anything ...
It really isn't a computer problem, but it turns out that Sfakía is a place with an office of the telephone company and two people with an internet connection, but no electrician: if they get an electrical problem, they send to Xania, 100 minutes drive away: "but we don't get electrical problems, the guy in the telephone company's office said ...
One of the two guys with internet connection is Georgious (or is it Yoannis?) at the taverna, he's very concerned to hear about my problem, and makes the connections for me find out about an Apple presence on Crete, we establish that there is one, and that it's in the capital Heraklion, he finds the phone number for me, makes the phone call, shows me how to find the street on a town plan, doesn't want money for the phone call, and insists that I'm welcome to use his computer if it would be any help ... Shame I have to leave in a way, maybe this is the nearest I would come to a real fishing village. Still I can always come back if I chose ...
