OK, so what's all this about the south coast being sub-tropical?

If I'm honest, I've no idea what sub-tropical means, really: but I certainly thought it meant something more than barren stones and half-dead thorn-bushes as far as the eye can see, and a sky which is three-quarters cloudy.
