Rethimnon 1 - no castles, no palaces

Rethimnon is somewhere I was really looking forward to visiting, after reports from my friends Nick and Denise, and having seen a very attractive set of photos on a hotel web-site.

Of course in reality I see nothing that looks remotely like those photos, and I don't find that particular hotel.

Following the signs to the castello leads me the wrong way down a one-way street, by the time I've sorted that out, the fortress has disappeared. The experience of driving round the outside of the walls has given me the same feeling as I've had from outside the walls of Doulens castle in northern France, and I remember that big note I've written for myself only that morning: no castles, no palaces.
