I found Crete rather democratic - when everyone is poor, there a very relaxed absence of a class system and its posh places.

I remember feeling the same thing when I was in Mexico for a whole day.

Poor? What am I saying? - about 80% of the cars I saw were new, and there were mobile phones absolutely everywhere - on the bus, on the boat, in the street ... The other exception was in the harbours, were some of the boats represented rather a lot of money.
