Ancient times:
The Minoan culture - but what was that? Minotaur - some kind of a bull with human legs, was it? Labyrinth ... what was the point of that? Something about a ball of golden thread, King Midas maybe, or is it just that the name's are similar.
Ah! Cnossus. Or maybe Knossos. Or Knossus. Or Cnosssos. Why can't they decide, once and for all?!

Today:
fanciful men's costume with a woolly hat, shiny black boots up to the knees, baggy trousers like old-fashioned English plus-fours; dunno about the top half, but probably a rifle slung over the shoulder
windmills with sails made of fabric rather than a hard material (cotton? how long does it last??!!)
brave bandits in World War II ... nice for them that they could be on the right side for once ...
