Westmorland and Cumberland are parts of the country I've never had a reason to visit. Like all the rest of the rural North of England, it seems pretty wild and woolly - the sheep seem to fit in better than the people, and are certainly better equipped for survival in these inhospitable places. Like their Norwegian cousins, these local inhabitants have discovered that asphalt is distinctly warmer and drier than the grass, and that cars really aren't much of a danger. |
